Semen Freezing

All semen freezing is carried out on centre unless there are exceptional circumstances.

If you phone the shed the week before on 01768840901 to make sure there is a pen and bring the rams at the beginning of the week.

Rams should be rested for 3 days prior to bringing to the shed.

Occasionally owners prefer to bring the rams in and take them straight away again. There are disadvantages to this as we will not know whether the semen has frozen before he is taken away

(the semen has to be chilled for several hours before freezing).

It is usually best for the rams to enter the shed and stay with us for a few days. It is best if you can bring feed/forage as we do not charge for keep and in this event the rams diet is not disrupted.

Regulin can be given to rams 50 days before entering the shed for semen freezing. This improves the rams libido and the quality of the semen. 2-3 implants are used, place the needle then pump the trigger 2-3 times. This can be done before AI/natural service also.

All rams are blood sampled for MV and Border Disease on entrance to the shed. This protects the owner and the purchaser should there be a subsequent disease breakdown.

If a ram is MV positive the owner is immediately informed. It is unusual for the semen to be kept in this circumstance.
